Theistic Evolution: A Scientific, Philosophical, and Theological Critique

Comments Off on Theistic Evolution: A Scientific, Philosophical, and Theological Critique

Theistic Evolution: A Scientific, Philosophical, and Theological Critique / Edited by J. P. Moreland, Stephen C. Meyer, Chris Shaw, Wayne Grudem.

Publication date: November 2017

Crossway Books
ISBN-10: 1433552868
ISBN-13: 9781433552861
Pages: 800
Price: $55

Summary:
The debate about biological origins continues to be hotly contested within the Christian church. Prominent organizations such as Biologos (USA) and Faraday Institute (UK) insist that Christians must yield to an unassailable scientific consensus in favor of contemporary evolutionary theory and modify traditional biblical ideas about the creation of life accordingly. They promote a view known as “theistic evolution” or “evolutionary creation.” They argue that God used—albeit in an undetectable way—evolutionary mechanisms to produce all forms of life. This book contests this proposal. Featuring two dozen highly credentialed scientists, philosophers, and theologians from Europe and North America, this volume provides the most comprehensive critique of theistic evolution yet produced. It documents evidential, logical, and theological problems with theistic evolution, opening the door to scientific and theological alternatives—making the book essential reading for understanding this worldview-shaping issue.

Series: BioLogos Books on Science and Christianity

Summary:
Christians confess that God created the heavens and the earth. But they are divided over how God created and whether the Bible gives us a scientifically accurate account of the process of creation.

Representatives of two prominent positions—old earth creation (Reasons to Believe) and evolutionary creation (BioLogos)—have been in dialogue over the past decade to understand where they agree and disagree on key issues in science and theology. This book is the result of those meetings.

Moderated by Southern Baptist seminary professors, the discussion between Reasons to Believe and BioLogos touches on many of the pressing debates in science and faith, including biblical authority, the historicity of Adam and Eve, human genetics and common descent, the problem of natural evil, and methodological naturalism. While both organizations agree that God created the universe billions of years ago, their differences reveal that far more is at stake here than just the age of the earth.

Old Earth or Evolutionary Creation? invites readers to listen in as Christian scholars weigh the evidence, explore the options, and challenge each other on the questions of creation and evolution. In a culture of increasing polarization, this is a model for charitable Christian dialogue.

  • Showcases charitable dialogue in the debate between creation and evolution

Controversy of the Ages: Why Christians Should Not Divide Over the Age of the Earth

Controversy of the Ages: Why Christians Should Not Divide Over the Age of the Earth / Theodore J. Cabal & Peter J. Rasor, II.

Publication date: May 2017

Weaver Book Company
ISBN: 9781941337752
Pages: 256
Price: $16

Summary:
The age of the earth and the doctrine of creation are heated topics within the church. Three evangelical camps have emerged to offer—young-earth creationists (e.g., Answers in Genesis), old-earth creationists (e.g., Reasons to Believe), and evolutionary creationists (e.g., BioLogos).

Controversy of the Ages carefully analyzes the debate by giving it perspective. Rather than offering arguments for or against a particular viewpoint on the age of the earth, the authors take a step back in order to put the debate in historical and theological context. The authors of this book demonstrate from the history of theology and science controversy that believers are entitled to differ over this issue, while still taking a stand against theistic evolution. But by carefully and constructively breaking down the controversy bit by bit, they show why the age issue is the wrong place to draw a line in the theological sand.

Readers will find the content stimulating, the tone charitable, and the documentation impressive. The goal of this book is to shed more light than heat on a complicated but contentious debate.
